So we picked up a YJ new
      #72891 - 08/14/09 04:16 AM

My brother picked up a 89 yj about a month ago and has had problems with it since then...cracked valve cover, filler tube leaks, needs body mounts BAD, doesn't idle aly lower than 1500, needs an exhaust...and the list goes on. Well we took it off his hands and are in the process of getting everything straightened out with it. Luckily we know someone that is very experienced with jeeps so hopefully he can tell us what exactly is wrong with it so we can either fix it or have him fix it. Already found a lift kit for it. It needs new leaf springs anyway...it was in an accident at one time and the front passenger leaf is bent on such an angle that it looks like an L. So...got some major work ahead but it'll be fun and by the time it's done I'll have learned how to drive it...lol Yeah, can't drive stick. Ohh also previous owner thought it'd be a cool idea to paint the truck with HOUSE paint...DUH!!! I've been scraping that off for the past 3 days.

I believe it has 1 fuel injector and it's a 4 cyl. We may pull that out eventually though. But you may be right also...it might be a carb. My husband hasn't really examined the engine all that closely.

If its carburated. The stock carbs are known for consistant problems. Best bet seems to run a weber or a motocraft carb to get rid of most of the reliability issues.

That should be some fun to work on. They are alot easier to work on. The lift kits I have seen are about half of what I would pay.

Thanks! I'll have to get my husband to check it out. When my bro first got the jeep it wouldn't run more than 10 minutes before it started bucking and backfiring. Now it doesn't do that anymore. So we really don't know what the problem was but we're still going to get the whole thing checked out to be safe.

Yeah I did check a few lift kits Dave, They're not too bad price wise,,,specially compared to the blazer...lol

Be careful with the 89s there is a mid year change. Prior to March 89 they used the Peugeot Transmission, After, I believe March 19 1989 they started using the Assian AX-15
